| Show n a r THINK THEY POLICE ARREST TWO suspicious characters they give conflicting accounts of their movements on night of attempted robbery from saturdays standard ahlie the people of ogden and vicinity were enjoying the circus yesterday both the city and county authorities ties were busy running dowland dow nand preventing crime a the most important arrest of the day was effected ty sheriff balley and deputy barlow wilson who placed C U guild and john murphy under arrest on suspicion of their being connected with the attempted street car holdup hold up thursday evening the men tell conflicting stories and are looked upon as being bad characters guild it Is claimed answers the description sent out of the man that ma de the gun play in the holdup hold up motorman butcher will be asked to view ehg prisoners today to see it be can identify them the arrest was effected about three yesterday afternoon at the circus grounds the story in connection with the arrest as told by sheriff bailey is to the effect that the two men were seen acting in a suspicious manner at the show grounds when guild had a paper which he was showing to murphy when the officers approached them guild hurriedly folded up the paper and the two attempted to hurry away the route the two men took was one through which they could enot leave the grounds and they were to retrace their steps when they were stopped by the officers atho story told by guild was to the effect that be had been in ogden for the past week and when he was asked to explain where he was thursday night stated that he had attended the races at glenwood remaining only until the close ot the first race when lie lioard ed a car and came to the city he claimed that he then went to a dance hall when asked if it was the utahna he replied no it was further up the street H was then asked it it was the lester park hall and stated that it was he also said that he met number ot dancers by being introduced by the floor manager and a fellow by the name ot brown and that he remained there until the close of the dancing after which he returned to the ogden house where he claimed As a matter of fact thero was no dancing at lester park on the night in question and the direction the hold tips took after leaving the car was toward the park murphy fold a different tale and paid that he had met guild only at 11 0 clock yesterday morning it was later learned that the men were in ev lanston on tuesday last toab reporter who saw the men but shortly after they were locked up they emoke freely claiming that they biad committed no crime they were apparently worried over their situation and appeared to be rather nervous guild who is 31 years of age bails from philadelphia which city he claims to have left but a chort time ago he stated that the last stop be made before reaching ogden was at rawlans ns wyoming and that he ar aved here on tuesday last since which time he has been in the city he repeated that be went to the faces thursday evening paying his own fare that after the first race he boarded a car for the city getting oft at street from there he stated that he went up to the utahna dance ball where he remained until it was closed when asked it he knew murphy or had been out with him he declared emphatically that he had no acquaintance with the fellow he claims to be an odd fellow wearing the emblem of that order and carrying receipts for dues paid murphy the other suspect is 23 years of age and states that he came here from arkansas arriving in ogden yesterday morning he said that he met guild on the street near the iwhite elephant saloon and spent the remainder of the day up until the time of their arrest la his company he admitted having met guild previously in evanston from which place he stole a ride to ogden in q box car eczema scald head hives itchiness of the skin of any sort instantly bellev f permanently cured doans ointment at any drug store |
