Show JUDGE NO compassion FOR VAGRANTS 1 sent many of them to labor on the rock pile suspended sentences few from saturdays standard suspended sentences were not the order in judge murphys Murp hys court this morning and all who were arraigned on the charge of vagrancy with the exception of two jiing men who gave indisputable evidence that they were not hobos but honest men were sent to the ock pile these two men edward halton and george stafford after pleading guilty requested the judge to allow them to make a statement the request was granted and instead of pouring into judge murphy s unwilling ear a story of hard luck and a tale of an ungrateful world they explained their position in a straightforward manly fashion impressed with the demeanor of the oung men judge murphy ordered that sentence be suspended and asked detective fender to use hla good offices in securing work for the men in contrast with the manner of the former men were the actions of john crady sam W C wll son and frank martin who were also accused of vagrancy these men pleaded not guilty to the charge friday and their trial was held this morning according to the stories that these men told all the world Is upside down at least for them misfortune in one shape or another had been their lot but judge murphy believing that their principal misfortune was a distaste tor work sentenced each to thirty days on the rock pile frank hennan harry hill and george hill all of whom pleaded guilty to the charge of mendicancy were sent to the itono stono gang for ten days each D S walker is a veterinary surgeon with the barnum bailey circus he that he was drunk but as the de bauch had sapped bis resources he was allowed to go under a suspended sentence with the understanding that he take the airline air line for the show john haskin charged with cruelty to animals and H kimball charged with disturbing the peace failed to appear and their bail was forfeited |
