Show AJ JAC COLORED CIVIL VAR VETERAN TIRED OF LIFE drank carbolic acid to escape long hours of toll which darkened evening of life from mondays standard becoming despondent over family troubles and his long hours of labor A J jackson colored a veteran of the civil war drank the contents of a two ounce bottle of carbolic acid at his residence lincoln avenue shortly before midnight last night from which he died a short time afterward jackson had been brooding avor bis troubles mainly of a domestic nature for some time past he also complained of the long hours he was forced to put tn at his place of employment the elephant saloon yesterday ha went about as usual and did not seem to bo any different from what he was at other times in talking with the smiths who occupy the same dwelling in which jackson lived he again spoke of the matters that weighed upon his mind in speaking of his long hours of work he stated that he was soon going to quit it from this remark it is taken that he then contemplated the rash act which he committed later on during the evening he called upon L W fair at street and remained for some time during which hs laughed and joked with those about him and apparently seemed to be in the best of spirits air fair is the secretary of the local colored masonic body of which jackson was a member jackson inquired concerning the annual report of the lodge and when shown a copy of the same which had been sent in to the grand lodge seemed greatly pleased jackson left the fair house about 11 after which it is supposed that he purchased the drug with which ho ended his life the bottle which contained the poison bearing the label of the depot drug store jackson then went to his home and entered the rear room which he used as a sleeping room and after undressing drank the add after which he lay down upon the bed about 1140 the other inmates of the house were awakened by jacksons screams and rushing to hia room they found him delirious ana writhing in agony the odor of tha acid was easily in the room and a glance at the table upon which the bottle that had contained the pol bon glood told the awful story of what the man had done dr fernlund was at once summoned but jack eon bad breathed hia last before the doctor arrived an examination of the corpse showed that the lips were badly burned by the acid which ha had first poured into a small glass and then drank A small quantity of the acid was left in the bottle and dr Fernlund stated that even that amount was sufficient 0 o kill several men there was nothings left by jackson that would show weyhe had taken hla lita and the matters mentioned above arc the only ones that are known to have troubled him jackson was 65 years of age and a veteran of the civil war he has been a resident of ogden for the past twenty years bearing an excellent deputa ton ha has been employed at the elephant saloon for the past three years and was considered honest and trustworthy he was a prominent member of the local colored elks and masonic lodges and a member of the i G A R A eon of the deceased resides in kansas city ho is also survived by J two edep sons one of whom is W P a chef in the employ of the union danine car service the other Is vincent jackson residing at mill creek |
