Dr. Mortensen a former BYU quarterback, married Rene Rhead of Ogden in 1950. They have wix children and five grandchildren, and he presently serves as a BYU Ward Bishop. If elected to the State Board of Education Dr. Mortensen states that he would emphasize vocational education at both the secondary and post secondary level. He thinks schools should help every student develop a salable, specialized skill that can be used to earn a decent livelihood. He also feels that schools must aid students in "learning to learn" and to do all within their resources to instill in young people a thirst for knowledge and a hunger for intellectual curiosity. Finally he would stress the mental health aspect of a good education which is simply teaching students to do what they have to do, when they have to do it, even though they might not want to do it. iiir """"" ' 1 ' DR.
