Property owners are tired of contributing to public buildings, built on whims and have to be remodeled soon after construction, tired of carpeting not only the floors but the walls of public houses, tired of destroying good buildings or selling them for 10 cents on the dollar. I was informed recently that my Editorials were ok as long as I kept out of politics. Just how can a writer side-step political problems when he's confronted with them day after day, and anyway mine is just a small voice crying in the wilderness. Who listens? I hope a few of my readers can remember the war years when gas was rationed, and prior to our traveling anywhere via car, our Uncle Sammy requested us to ask ourselves our-selves the question: "Is this trip necessary?" Well, it seems that we are back to a wartime question, and the boys who hold the reins of school, city, county, state and government spending are going to have to decide what jobs are necessary, what trips are necessary, what equipment is necessary, what buildings are necessary, what programs are necessary, etc. With the heavy California vote in favor of Proposition 13 that calls for a roll back in property taxes to a flat 1 percent of the 1975 property value, which will cut state revenues a few billion bucks, some handwriting is showing up on the wall; other states will catch the torch and demand Propositions 13's all over the land. Property owners are tired of paying civil servants exorbitant salaries, plus furnishing them with can see the handwriting on the wall which is this: "The boys in the dirver seats are going to decide on what things are absolutely necessary or the silent voices of the people will be. heard at the polls come election day." |
