Show Chairman defends Jimmy I Carter's Tlayboy' stand Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee of Iron County, Rodney Decker, says candidate Jimmy Carter's recent Playboy interview may "create some questions in the minds of voters," but that it will not be the over-riding factor in voting. Decker said he feels other issues will come up between now and November which will gain equal attention and will help the voters base their decisions. Carter's Utah campaign chief, Kay Christensen, said that taken in portions, the interview would be damaging to Carter's chances, chan-ces, especially in Utah. But, she said, taken as a whole, the interview in-terview shows "the kind of moral man Gov. Carter is." In the interview, Carters used slang phrases in describing sexual union and extra-marital relations. Carter also told the interviewer he has committed adultery in his heart many times, but believes God forgives him for it. Mrs. Christensen said anyone not admitting to those types of feelings is probably not a very honest person. She said Carter has had a self-righteous Sunday School-type image among some voters and she feels the interview-was interview-was meant to dispel that image. Carter has since used the interview in-terview as an example of his "openness" in the presidential campaign. Mrs. Christensen said the interview in the famed girlie magazine may not help Carter's campaign in Utah, but that "if it is clearly understood, it won't hurt either." Decker said he feels Carter will have a "reasonable showing" in Iron County. He said it may be too optomistic to say that Carter will "carry the county," but that he hopes he will make a good showing in the November elections. |
