Show ! City Council approves terms of garbage deal j Health Department. The resolution was forwarded to the Iron County Commission for any further action. The council was also informed of the results of a recent landfill inspection by the Utah State Health Department-Solid Waste Division. The state division said the Cedar City landfill meets all basic requirements and the city was congratulated for the progress made in the sanitation and solid waste area. A letter of resignation, effective ef-fective October 15, from Police Officer Craig Holyoak, was read to the council. The council accepted ac-cepted the resolution and authorized the city manager and police chief to accept applications ap-plications for a replacement. Other action included: The approval of the trading of two segments of road for the "collector road system." Center Street, from 800 West to 1150 West, will be withdrawn and 1150 West from Center to 200 North added. The council also .heard a report on narcotics activities in Cedar City submitted by police officers. The report said 21 arrests had been made in the first six months of this year in connection with controlled substances. The report noted a "substantial increase in-crease in narcotics." The officers recommended penalties be stronger in the case of drug-related felonies. It was also reported that the cooperative Cedar City-Iron County Schools swimming complex qualifies for a federal participation construction grant. Upon approval by the Denver office involved, the city and schools will be authorized to advertise for bids. The much-delayed and somewhat controversial garbage franchise between Cedar City and Mosedell Collection was finally approved by the city council for formal signing. The agreement would give sole commercial garbage pick-up , service to the Willis-Mosdell-owned firm. The terms and language of the agreement were approved by the council and it is expected the franchise agreement will be signed by both parties within the week. The council also passed a resolution stating the city's approval of placing a question on the November 2 general election as to whether or not voters favor continued membership in the five-county district health department. The question would give the voters the option of stating their approval of withdrawal in order to form a separate Iron County |
