Show T-bird grap piers enter Las Vegas M eet Southern Utah State's grap-plers grap-plers hit the road again this week (Wed.) as the T-Birds traveled to Las Vegas for a dual against University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The T-Birds opened their season last week by placing sixth (21 1 2 points) out of nine teams in the UNLV Classic which was won by University of Arizona. UNLV finished third with 51 points and had four wrestlers place second. Mike Springer (126), Pete Durazo (134), Craig Foster (177) and Ed Veatch (HWT) led the Rebels. UNLV also won its opening dual by tromping Cal Lutheran 49-0. Three T-Birds placed in the action at Las Vegas, Eusebio Sams (167), Bob Sanders (158) and Jim Tripp (118). Sams led the way by placing second while Sanders finished third and Tripp fourth. Sams won his opening match with a fall over Don Jackson of Cal Lutheran in four minutes then decisioned Wes Bradshaw (University of Arizona), 8-5, before losing to Lee Austin (University of Utah) in the finals 5-2 in overtime. Sanders lost his opening round match to Jeff Wilton (UNLV), 4-3, 4-3, then came back to win three in a row to claim his third place medal. Sanders disposed of Mike Schaefer (Cal Lutheran) 11-0,. Bob Sulick (Cal-Poly-Pomona) 12-6, and Ralph Fallentine (Utah 2-1 in overtime.) Tripp lost his first round match to Mario Martinez (Arizona), 6-3, then came back to whip Takafumi Hamabata (Cal-Poly-Pomona) and Maruice Sanchez (U. of New Mexico) by the identical scores of 5-3. Martinez then decisioned Tripp again, this time 6-1. The T-Birds remain on the road next week (Dec. 10) as they travel to La Mirada, California, for the Biola Dual Meet Tournament. |
