Show Musical Concerts dominate December A series of musical events representing all areas of the Southern Utah State College Music Department will be presented during the month of December. "December is a busy month so we urge everyone to mark their calendars now to enable them to attend all the presentations," Blaine H. Johnson, music department chairman, said. Each concert will begin at 8 p.m. in the SUSC Music Recital Hall unless otherwise specified. Each presentation is free to the - public. : ; : A Jazz Band Concert will be held December 2 under the direction of James Ketch, instructor in-structor of brass studies and jazz1 band director. Included during the evening performance will be music made popular by the Count Basie Orchestra, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Stan Kenton Bands. Professor Ketch will be featured in a Trumpet Recital December 4. The performance will include fellow faculty members David Nyman, Hal Campbell, Steve Allen and James Harrison. Also assisting Professor Ketch will be the Cedar City Community Orchestra Or-chestra and soprano Christine Winterrose. On December 8 a Brass Ensemble En-semble Concert will be presented featuring various small and large brass ensembles. Included in the program will be numbers by the Brass Quintet, Brass Trio, Trombone Quartet and a larger Brass Choir. Members of the Percussion Ensemble will assist on some of the brass choir works. Professor Ketch will be directing the program. Special Christmas performances per-formances include two in Cedar City and a SUSC Symphony Band and A Cappella Choir. Directing the program will be Steven W. Allen, band director, and Blsine Johnson, choir director. This program will be SUSC's Christmas gift to the city," Dr. Johnson said. The Manning-Halversen Oratorio Society Concert will be presented December 12 by the local campus-communUy organization. Planned is a Christmas program with vocal and orchestral presentations. The SUSC Symphony Orchestra Or-chestra will perform with the Chapperal High School choirs December 15 in Las Vegas. The 50-member SUSC orchestra will be directed by Professor David Nyman; directing the Chapperal choirs will be Klark Black, a 1974 SUSC graduate. Included in the program will be Vivaldi's "Gloria," and Scarlatti's "Endimione e Cen-tia," Cen-tia," for solo soprano and piccoli trumpet. Soloists will include Christine Winterrose and James Ketch, assistant orchestra director. "This is the third year we have been invited to perform with the Las Vegas school," Professor Nyman said, "we are very pleased to accept the invitation." |
