The museum houses many displays of pioneer culture and the courthouse is used for the Chamber of Commerce Offices and for the productions of the Courthouse Players which are presented during the summertime. St. George Pioneer Heritage As an aid in retracing those footsteps a formal printed Walking Tour Guide will soon be available at motels and the Chamber of Commerce office. M on true Larkin ' In the year of 1862 on the second day of March, St. George had it's official beginning. There have been many ex-experiences ex-experiences in the history of our community that remind us of our priceless heritage-not by our efforts but by our pioneer forefathers. We sit in the shade of trees that were developed by men who came to this desert land and said "lets have shade trees, green grass ' and flowers", and we are enjoying the fruits of their labors. , , : As we have been working oh this Walking Tour of our city many experiences of the first settlers add dimension and meaning to out lives., '. The Walking Tour we have ' ' planned begins at the Old Courthouse corner going north past the McQuarrie building and turning west at the corner to the Brigham Young Winter -Home. Then turn south to the corner of the Trafalga restaurant and east one-half , block to the Gardeners' Club Hall of 1867 (being restored as ' an Art Gallery this side of the Chez Maggy). Then retrace your steps back to! the Trafalga corner and then south one block to the Woodward Jr. High school then continue east past the library to the Tabernacle. Next turn south to the old Dixie . Academy (college) building. As we walk two blocks east we pass an open area that was filled with Mulberry trees to feed the silkworms. The last two blocks go north from the Spoke and Pedal Shop back to the courthuse. This only mentions a few of the 23 points of interest found in this brief tour. In these few blocks you will get the "feel" of the religious, cultural, architectural and historic points of interest as well as the modern busines business center of St George. As you pass the Old Courthouse Cour-thouse you will see the iron X's that tie the beams and the walls . together and you will become aware that this building is mostly constructed without nails. The McQuarrie building is a prime example of New England architecture. These Dixie Pioneers had to bring a little bit of home. with them. Another thing that we con-sider con-sider modern is ... mass-production. mass-production. .But j the bioneers" used this method when building' -' a small rectangular building of the same dimensions, and material on each building lot. This served as storage, a granery or an extra room. How would youlike to see "The Merchant of Venice", "Ingomar", or "Leah the Forsaken"? If we had been around in 1875 we could have viewed these fine plays in the Social Hall. The story of the "Green Gates" is legendary in St. George. To look at the hand-chiseled hand-chiseled sandstone blocks in the Tabernacle and Woodward school and to know that each craftsman left his mark to such an extent that one could tell who had chiseled which stone block , builds a continuity with the past. It is hoped that residents and tourists alike will enjoy retracing the steps of our forefathers around the historical area of St. George. |
