Show Increased enrollments present problems Morris projected further: "If the new: South addition is completed com-pleted by August of 1977, at least five of the seven rooms will be occupied by the first year. An addition to the East Elementary School needs to be ready for occupancy by August of 1978 and a fourth elementary school needs to be ready for use by August of 1979." Increased enrollments in the Iron County School District are creating future and present building problems, Dr. J. Clair Morris said in a statement recently. For example, he said, in 1971-72,. 1971-72,. there were 204 students enrolled in kindergarten in Iron District. In the years following there were 233, 246, and 282 and 296 respectively. "The kindergarten enrollment for the fall of 1976 is expected to be 350." Morris said. "Therefore, the 1976 fall kindergarten enrollment will be 72 percent larger than was the enrollment for 1971. "If kindergarten estimates hold true for this fall, there will be two sections in Parowan, one at Escalante Valley, four at South Elementary and two sections at East Elementary." . Projected into the future, Cedar Junior High, according to Morris, will contain 900 students in about six more years, and within eight years, Cedar High will contain 900 students. "An unknown variable on the horizon, such as approval of the alunite project, would likely accelerate the growth and rewrite all the statistics," he added. . , In grades K-12, there is an average increase enrollment each year of about fou r percent. However, Morris said, average increases of pre-school children is about 12 percent per year. Cedar High and the new Junior High accommodate up to 1000 students, each, Morris said. However, he added, all classrooms in the three Cedar elementary schools are now filled and effective this fall, at the South Elementary School, the nurses room will be used as a classroom. |
