Show Tuesday's primary election set; promises many tight races, state and local This year's primary election could be one of the closest, in mapy races, in recent memory, as Evidenced by the strong floor fights and close vote tallies at the conventions held earlier in the summer. Utahns will have a big choice of candidates to sort out as they close the curtains next Tuesday, the 14th. No Utah voter should be content to say, "It's only the primary" this year. The governor's race shapes up to be one of the highlights of this year's various races with Cedar native Dixie Leavitt and Scott Matheson, former Iron County resident, both running for the top seat on differing tickets. Running against Leavitt on the Republican ticket is Attorney General Vernon Romney and John Preston Creer opposes Scott Matheson' on the Local voters will also be deciding between two Republican candidates for the four-year commission seat and two for the two-year seat. James L. Clark and G. D. McDonald oppose each other for thfe right to oppose a local Democrat for the four year seat and James Hoyle, Jr. and H. Grant Seaman vie for the two-year two-year post. Polls open Tuesday at 7 a.m. ' and will close at 8 p.m. at various locations throughout the county. The primary election is "open" that is, any voter is free to vote either one party or the other and is not restircted to vote only for a pre-registered party. , ' The race for the 2nd Congressional seat takes it's share of the spotlight, in view of Alan Howe's recent convictions in various Salt Lake City Courts. Republicans J. Preston Hughes and Dan Marriott have both made frequent visits to the Cedar City area to vie for votes in the tight race. Jack Carlson and Orrin G. Hatch are both hoping to get the Republican " nod to go after Senator Moss's senatorial seat. The Iron County Fair was the v8ie of confrontation for the two Republican Secretary of State. Lt. Governor candidates, i ; , ' William Dunn and David Smith Monson, both riding in the parade. Robert B. Hansen and Loren Dale Martin seek the Attorney General nomination from the Republican ticket. D. Gilbert Athay and Felshaw King seek the same office on the Democratic side. ? Two Democrats are asking for votes for the state auditor position, A. John Olson and Robert Shaw. Republicans Sanford Darger and Mark Haroldsen are in search of the State Treasurer office on the Republican side. |
