Show Lady Lions Make Appeal to All Citizens To Participate in Patriotic Fourth Celebration By Mrs. Ralph B. Piatt We, the Lady Lions of Cedar City, would like to stir a new wave of patriotic feeling and turn this Fourth of July Into the most inspiring celebration In our nation's history. On July 4, 1963, the carillon bell at the College of Southern Utah will ring for four minutes at a. m., and radio station KSUB will play the sound of bells for two minutes. July of 1776 saw the Declara-tlon Declara-tlon of Independence, democracy's democra-cy's greatest manifesto, approved approv-ed by the Continental Congress. Delegate John Adims went to hi Philadelphia boaiding house and penned a letter to his wife Abigail, Abi-gail, in Massachusetts: "I am apt to believe," he wrote of the great event in which he had taken part, "that it will be celebrated cele-brated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. festi-val. It ought to be commemorated commemorat-ed as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized sol-emnized with pomp and Parade, with shows, games, guns, bells, bonfires and Illuminations from one end of this rontinuent to the other, from this time forward forevermore." Perhaps a little of the noble grandeur that John Adams felt has been dulled In our hearts by the passage of time. The Fourth of July has evolved Into more of t summer holiday than a patrio tic festival and - "games" and "sports" have taken over perhaps per-haps a little too much of the stage. The bells, which John Adams also mentions, we propose, pro-pose, as a uniting feature of the whole day much like the national na-tional observance of two minutes min-utes of silence at 11 a. m. on Veterans Day. Historical Background Adams wrote ot an Independence Independ-ence celebration "from one end of this continent to the other," at a time when the newborn Republic scarcely penetrated beyond be-yond the Appalachian Mountains, when the whole West was a wilderness wil-derness whose title was In the hands of Britain and Spain. Alaska Alas-ka belonged to Russia, and Ha waii had not even been discovered. dis-covered. Today, the grandeur of the Independence Day he envisioned envis-ioned should certainly be remembered. re-membered. The theme for the Lady Lions miniature parade will be "Let Freedom Ring." May we ask the citizens of our city to unite and use their creative ability with children's floats of many kinds. There will be four major divisions: divi-sions: Patriotic, Nursery Rhyme. America In Space, Bikes and Trlkes. A grand prize will be given, giv-en, also prizes for the best float In each respective division. Please start early on your floats and avoid the last minute rush. Time of the parade will be published pub-lished at a later date. |
