Show CSU Broncos Handed 14-6 ICAC Loss by Weber Wildcats - College of Southern Utah foot-bull foot-bull team suffered a 14 to 6 setback set-back at the hands of Weber College Col-lege Saturday afternoon at Ogden and was forced into third place iln the Intermountain Collegiate Conference standings. j Weber moved into second place i behind the Boise Broncos, one-half one-half game ahead of CSU and only a loss by Weber at the hands of Carbon this week end could I put the CSU crew into a tie for second place. I It was the final conference contest con-test of the season for Coach Bruce Osborne and his Broncos and i they ended the conference with three wins and three losses. A great defensive game, neither team was able to score in the first half of play and only one generated drive was completed , i'j the entire game. Weber made that drive taking the opening kickoff in the second sec-ond half of play and movin; 80 yards for the first score of the game. Working against a strong wind the Wildcats took advantage advan-tage of two penalties and concentrated con-centrated on bucking the line to grind out the first TD of the game. Late in the third quarter of play a punt by the Broncos was blocked and recovered on the seven se-ven yard line to set up the second sec-ond Weber score. In the fourth period of play the Broncos came through with Larry Hauder and Von McCand- less hitting the quarterback whO was back to pass, forcing him to fumble. Dave Bray, alert CSU tackle, picked up the loose ball and moved into the Weber end zone for the only Bronco score of the day. Duane Fo'd booted the extra point, but a penalty nullified nul-lified the score and a second attempt at-tempt was missed for a final score of 14 to 6. Playing conditions were poor with a strong wind pagulng both squads. Broncos found themselves in serious trouble troughout the entire en-tire contest. On the opening play of the game a fumble by CSU was recovered by Weber on the 20 yard stripe, but the Broncos j dug in and held. i It was a matter, however, of holding throughout most of the first half of play with their backs to their goal posts almost from that opening play. Cited for fine play in the contest con-test were linemen Lynn Fisher, Dave Bray and Larry Ilaudcr. At ends Gary Robins and Von Mc-ICandless Mc-ICandless did fine jobs and Paul 'McGinn at end turned in his outstanding out-standing defensive effort of the I year from the defensive halfback (spot. He was cited by the Weber coach for possible conference hon-jors hon-jors for his efforts. Duane Ford shone as usual on defense and sparked the team for a brief time in the second half of piay wiiii his signal calling. |
