Show High School Clamps Down on Student Absenteeism; Defines New Program i Problem of attendance at the Cedar City High School has become be-come an ever increasing one, according ac-cording to Principal P. M. Beth-era. Beth-era. As a result a new policy of attendance has been adopted lid is now in use, he said. In order that parents may understand un-derstand the policy and what is required from the students and' the parents, the new policy is published as follows: I. Definition of absence: A. Excused absence: An absence ab-sence for the proper cause with the prior knowledge and approval approv-al of parents and for reasons acceptable ac-ceptable to the p'incipil, such as Illness In the J-.nmediaie family, fam-ily, urgent necessity, illness of the student. B. Unexcused absence: An absence ab-sence which occurs with the knowledge of parents or guardians, guard-ians, but the reason for such absence ab-sence is not acceptable to the principal or his staff. C. Cut: An absence which is an intentional and planned violation vio-lation of the state attendance laws. II. Consequence and procedures regarding absence. A. Excused absence: Students will be allowed to make up work according to arrangements with the individual teacher. Upon returning re-turning to school, students must bring a note from home explaining explain-ing the absence. Arrangements should be made before absence, if possible, and chocked through the office. C. Cuts: (Cuts are on a class basis.) At the first offense the parents will be called and informed in-formed of the absence. Their co-joperation co-joperation is solicited and the absence ab-sence is recorded on the student's record which he signs. I At the second offense, the stu-'dent stu-'dent is dismissed from the class. Re-instatement is possible if the parents consult with the princi- 'pal through an appointment and icome to school with the stuiient I to discuss a solution to the proh-,lem. proh-,lem. t j At the third offense, the student stu-dent is dismissed from the class, and the case is turned over to the juvenile authorities. A cut cannot be made up by 'doing extra work. It will result In the lowering of the grade one .full letter. B. Utiexcused absence. Unex-'cused Unex-'cused absence will allow for I make up work according to each teacher's policy. More than j ten unexcused absences fcr fl full year course, or five from a semester course will require di-,missal di-,missal from the class. Cuts will be Included In this total. Verbal or written explanation must be presented to the attendance attend-ance counselors before the student stu-dent will receive any permit to re-enter class. III. Leaving School: Students must obtain permission permis-sion from the office to leave school for any reason. j |
