Show Station KSUB and Television Service March 3. 1956 During the past many years, Station KSUB has endeavored to provide good radio service to the citizens cit-izens of Southern Utah and to this Tri-State Area; its management will do all that it can to maintain and even improve upon that standard of service. Also, since the growth of television across the country, the officers and directors of KSUB have given much consideration con-sideration to the feasibility of providing television to all of the residents of this area. However, it should be clear to all who have studied this matter, that, to date, conditions have made such an undertaking inadvisable. in-advisable. In the first place, this market is very small comparatively speaking; secondly the area is at a considerable distance from any existing television station or cross-country connecting micro-link; and thirdly the investment required for TV equipment and to carry forward the operating costs, particularly these of providing acceptable programs, have been high, indeed. Nevertheless, one should not conclude that these factors will prevail indefinitely, that television service ser-vice available to all will not come to Cedar City and vicinity. As a matter of fact, this type of television tele-vision service on some acceptable basis could be provided pro-vided in 1956 or 1957. The conditions relating to television tele-vision are changing rapidly and many new factors are entering into the picture. The attitude of the federal fed-eral Communications Commission is to encourage the development of television service to as many of the remote areas of the country as possible. Consequently, Conse-quently, the rules of that commission are being, and will be changed further in many respects to aid in this development In addition, new and less expensive operating equipment is coming on the market and other changes In TV operating procedures will be helpful to this end. We should like to make clear to all that KSUB has not and does not now oppose wired television systems. One is here In Cedar City today and no doubt -it will bring fine programs to its subscribers. The position posi-tion of KSUB has been and is, that, for the reasons mentioned above, a television service available to all will come eventually to Cedar City. The time has not arrived when a general television tele-vision service can be brought to Cedar City on the basis of an attractive financial investment only. KSUB has had no illusions about this point The station did agree to lead the way in an endeavor to provide this broader television coverage, this effort being conti-gent conti-gent upon securing financial support from citizens of this area to help do the Job. While the response was most gratifying, it has not been adequate to warrant-undertaking warrant-undertaking the venture at present None of the money pledged for this purpose, by any person, has been spent and due accounting will be made to each person offering support Perhaps the effort was premature, pre-mature, but in any event, KSUB plans to press forward for-ward to provide general television service in this area, by one means or another, at the earliest practicable prac-ticable date. In the meantime wired television service is now available to subscribers in Cedar City, and to the Trans-Community Television Company, and to others concerned, we extend our congratulations, and wish them well.
