Show Cedar Man Wins Nation's Second Highest Military Honor in Korea t - s V & , $. 4. G. ROBERT SHORT The Distinguished Service Cross, one of the highest honors than can be bestowed on a member mem-ber of the Armed Forces was received re-ceived by Sfc. G. Robert Short for his action in Korea. Word was received in Cedar City through an Eighth Army communication that was signed by William C. Poole, commanding officer of Sfc. Short, who is now serving with the 14th Combat Engineer Battalion. The citation received by Sfc. Short read in part: "Headquarters & Service Company, Com-pany, -..th Engineer Combat Battalion, Bat-talion, were laying a mine field in front of United Nations defensive defen-sive positions where there was a sudden attack by the enemy. Sergeant Short, realizing the success of the mission was imperiled im-periled and realizing his men could not hope to hold off such an attack, ordered his men to withdraw to a friendly line. He then took up an exposed position posi-tion and started to cover the withdrawal of his men. Although seriously wounded and under murderous enemy fire, Sergeant Short stood up and started to walk toward the oncoming enemy. ene-my. "Sergeant Short's daring action stalled the crushing assault and his men returned with aid to drive back the enemy. Refusing aid, Sergeant Short continued to lead his men onward until the enemy were beaten back. Sergeant Ser-geant Short's extraordinary gallantry gal-lantry and exemplary valor are in keeping with the highest traditions tra-ditions of the United States Army." It is noteworthy that Sfc. Short is serving his second tour of duty du-ty in the Korean war zone, previously pre-viously serving with the paratroopers. para-troopers. He also received wounds during his first tour of duty, returning re-turning again to receive this outstanding citation. |
