Show This Community Can Win Tourist Dollars W. C. Winder, State Department of Vocational Education 8 The whole world is now bidding bid-ding for profitable tourist dollars. dol-lars. All foreign countries, 47 other states and our territories, are actively engaged, and spending spend-ing plenty of money, in selling their wares. Where does this leave Utah and its communities? It will be generally agreed, by those who know the story, that no other state of comparable size can offer so much in scenic grandeur and fascinating historic histor-ic background. Yet little good is derived from scenic grandeur that is not seen nor from historic backgroundthat is not learned and related. Scenic wonders and mountain and lakes, as tourist attractions still depend on the art of selling. Thus a function and responsibility responsibili-ty rests on the shoulders of every person who meets the traveling public. The responsibility for a successful program depends on a lot of alert and informed individuals indi-viduals more than it does on any organized group or club. One ignorant, ig-norant, flippant or insolent person per-son can quickly undo all the good work of a dozen kindly and helpful people. All Utah residents should realize re-alize that, after the Korean emergency emer-gency is ended, their own standard stand-ard of living will be affected by what is now done in building the tourist trade into a substantia and growing source of statewide income. The requirements of doing a good selling Job are not simple, but the end is so very well worth the means. Every single person who meets the traveling public should always keep in mind the following major objectives: 1. He should possess a working work-ing knowledge of things that are important to the tourist in his own community and throughout the state. He should thus be able to answer any reasonable question ques-tion asked him by a tourist as well as to make enthusiastic recommendations rec-ommendations of worth while things to see and do. 2. He should be able to quickly analyze the needs and desires of the traveler. 3. He should learn and practice the universal principles that ere. ate good will in all prospective customers, either local or from other areas. Utah possesses in abundance the varied assets that should attract at-tract a high percentage of the traveling public. Let it again be repeated that whether we utilize these wonderful assets will depend de-pend on every man, woman and .child in the state who in some jway comes in contact with the .traveling public. |
