Show Gordon Clark Enters Republican State Senate Race The selection of a State Senator from the 11th Senatorial district, which includes Iron and Washington Wash-ington counties, has taken a new turn this week. As a result the Republican party will undoubtedly un-doubtedly have two candidates seeking the office Instead of the one that had been expected. Friends of Gordon W. Clark, prominent resident of St. George, have filed a designation of candidacy can-didacy for him with the Secretary Secre-tary of State, we understand. We have been unable to learn whether whe-ther or not Mr. Clark will accept or not. but we have been assured as-sured by his supporters that he will. Mr. Clark was reported to be a candidate for the position early ear-ly this year, but after a committee commit-tee of Republicans from the two counties had reached an agreement agree-ment that the Senator should come from Washington county this term, and decided that Or-val Or-val Hafen of St. George should be the nartv candidate. Mr. Clark withdrew. An announcement of the committee com-mittee action and an announcement announce-ment of Mr. Hafen's candidacy appeared in the Iron County Record. Rec-ord. Later Mr. Clark announced his withdrawal from the race in keeping with the wishes of the party. However, at that time, a number of Republican party members indicated that they felt that the party's nominee should be selected on a basis of the election laws rather than by committee agreement. These members pointed out that under the law any qualified individual individ-ual may file for the nomination, or a group of his Supporters may file for him. As a result of the "gentlemen's agreement" between the two 'counties it seemed to these members that the party has limited lim-ited the race for State Senator and designated the party's candidate can-didate without proper represert-tion represert-tion to the party. However, nothing noth-ing further was done until recently, re-cently, and it appeared that Mr. Hafen would be the party nom-tnee.for nom-tnee.for the office. It is understood that 27 signers sign-ers filed Mr. Clark's candidacy, with the signers being about equally divided between the two counties of the district. |
