Show City Should Make Improvements At Softball Field We admit that the city is very much occupied with two important city improvement projects, but "at the same time would suggest that some attention be given to another an-other development project that would be a major contribution con-tribution to the welfare of the community. The two projects that are occupying the administration administra-tion are street oiling and water development, the most important and most urgently needed improvements in the city. The other project we refer to is that of improve- merits needed at the city softball field, which -provides recreation and diversion for large crowds nearly every night in the week. In addition to providing recreation for more than 200 individuals who participate in the games, several hundred people gather at the field every evening to watch games that are being played. Certainly any program pro-gram that reaches that many people every day of the summer sum-mer is worthy of serious consideration and the expenditure expendi-ture of public funds. Civic clubs have done much to develop the park, both in the way of work and expenditure of funds for the various vari-ous developments, including the building of the field, installation in-stallation of a lighting system, rest rooms, and so on. The civic groups will continue to make improvements as rapidly ra-pidly as they can, and there is no doubt but that the park will continue to furnish wholesome recreation for old and young throughout each summer season. There are two rtefinite improvements that are needed that the city should provide, first a new bridge across Coal creek, and second surfacing of a driveway circling the field. The bridge that now leads to the park is very narrow, nar-row, and must be used for automobile and foot traffic, which creates a hazardous condition. With more than 100 cars on the park each night, and frequently as many as 200, and with many spectators walking toi thafield, there is a traffic hazard as the crowds gather, and as the cars and people leave the field. The city has purchased a dismantled dis-mantled bridge and the steel has been on the grounds for some time. It would be a great service to many people. and a big improvement in the recreation facilities, if this bridge could be built now and made available during the softball season. The crowds are getting larger every day, and the need for the bridge is becoming more and more apparent. The oil surfacing of the driveway around the park would add greatly to the pleasure of players and spectators specta-tors alike. Many people park their cars around the playing play-ing area and watch the games from them, and as each car moves around the field, particularly on the south and east, a cloud of dust is stirred up which is swept over the field and into the crowd on the bleachers by the prevailing prevail-ing breezes. To surface the road from the entrance of the park, around the field to the left field foul line, would be a tremendous improvement that would add much to the comfort and enjoyment of those who participate in this popular recreation activity either as players or spectators. The city is in the midst of a street oiling program, and it seems that this would be an ideal time to undertake this improvement. We hope the city administration, the softball association, asso-ciation, and the civic clubs interested in development of recreational facilities, will work out a cooperative program pro-gram that will result in this much needed improvement being accomplished. |
