Show Mound Team Sets Softball Pace fls Half Hears End As the first half of the Cedar City softball league nears the end of play Desert Mound remains re-mains on top with six wins and only two lses. However, two teams, Columbia Iron Mines and Utah Parks are in a position, tied for second, to at least tie the Mounders if they should lose one of their two remaining games of the first half. At the end of play Monday evening the league standings were as follows: Team Won Lost Pet. Desert Mound .... 6 2 .750 Utah Parks 6 3 .667 Columbia 6 3 .667 Record 5 4 .555 Utah Const 2 7 .250 Bradshaw Chev .... 1 7 .125 Utah Parks, holding down third spot last week, gained a tie with Columbia Iron Mines this week by beating them 7 to 4. Utah Parks jumped ahead in the first two innings when they scored all seven of their runs. Three hits and three runs were scored in the first inning against Columbia, and one hit and three costly errors allowed four runs in the second inning. Columbia started late, not scoring until the fifthy inning of play. They out-hit out-hit the Parks, seven to five, but were unable to push across the necessary runs. Other games played during the week saw Columbia take Bradshaw Brad-shaw Chevrolet, 14 to 6 In a free hitting affair. Four consecutive home runs were hit by the mines team in one inning. Home runs were by Keith Cripps, "Bunny" Fullmer, Donald Milne and Kent Dover. Desert Mound won Its only encounter during the week against Utah Construction, 14 to 9. Utah Construction, playing two games, lost its second game to the Iron County Record 11 to 4, after taking an early lead of 4 to 0 in the first three innings of the game. Two home runs were hit in the Record-Construction game, one by Boyd "Goonie" Adams for the Record, and Dave Gates for Construction. Next week's schedule, which will end the first half of play pits Bradshaw against Desert Mound and Utah Construction . against Columbia Wednesday evening. Monday night the Iron County Record and Desert Mound tangle in the decisive game for the MouncTers. The second game Monday evening pits Bradshaw against Utah Parks in the closing game of the first half. In case of a tie in the f 'rst half I play, a playoff will be held by the association to determine the first half winner. This will eliminate elim-inate any trouble at the end of ithe season's play. |
