Show EmmaLowder Webb Honored at Open House June 29 An open house which started at 3:30 p. m. Sunday and ran through the afternoon and evening, eve-ning, honored Parowan's oldest resident, Mrs. Emma Lowder Webb in the observance of her 89th birthday. Her birthday was Monday, June 30, but those in charge of the open house felt that Sunday was a more opportune oppor-tune time for friends and relatives rela-tives to call on the aged lady. The open house was held at her home in the Chanell apartments apart-ments on Main street and was arranged by Mrs. Golda Guymon, Mrs. Nellie Bentley and Mrs. Al-bena Al-bena Gurr. From early in the afternoon af-ternoon until almost 9 p. m. a steady string of callers came to visit the honored lady. Refreshments Refresh-ments were served to all who called by the hostesses. Many of the visitors were from out-of-town. "Aunt Emma" as she Is known by most people of the community enjoys good health, lives alone and is able to take care of herself, her-self, besides spending many hours each day sewing for herself, her-self, her friends and for the Relief Re-lief Society. She sews and crochets many articles for her friends and relatives, including pieced quilts, aprons, etc. She has always been an active church worker, serving in the Primary organization for 17 years and is still active in Relief Society Socie-ty work after almost 70 years as a member of that organization. Born in Salt Lake City June 30, 1863, the eldest daughter of John and Emily Hodgetts Lowder, she came to Parowan at an early age, and besides living here, she also spent some years in Para-gonah Para-gonah and Panguitch as a young girl- She married Abraham Webb in the St. George Temple Mar. 24, 1882 and since then has lived in Eureka, Delta, Salt Lake City, Provo, Cedar City and southern California besides Parowan. Her husband died May 25, 1920. They were parents of six children, only on-ly two of whom survive, Edwin Webb, Cedar City, and Alma Webb, Eugene, Oregon. She has 16 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. She also raised two small Cedar City girls, Hazel Haz-el Dawn and Beulah Macfarlane, after their mother's death. |
