Show Redmen Drop First Game of State Tournament to Last Year's Champs Freezing up at the hoop, while their opponents were definitely "hot," the Cedar high school Red-men Red-men lost their chance at the state basketball championship in the first three minutes of their first game. Unable to find the hoop In the opening minutes of the game against Monroe yesterday afternoon, after-noon, while the Monroe players could not miss, the Redmen let the state champions of last year, jump into a 10 point, 11 to 1 lead before the game was three minutes old. Although the Red-men Red-men rallied after that they could not close the gap and lost the game by the same 10-point margin, mar-gin, 55 to 45. As a result of the loss the Red-men Red-men go into the consolation bracket, and will meet the Union-high Union-high school team from Uintah county in today's game. Union lost to Salina yesterday, 47 to 26. A loss to Union today would put the Cedar team out of the tournament, tour-nament, while a victory would pit Coach Alma Garrett's team against the winner of today's game between Wasatch and Cyprus. Cy-prus. In the Cedar-Monroetgame yesterday, yes-terday, Rasmussen, Shipp and Gleave with three quick baskets put Monroe into a 6 to 0 lead. Lamar Clark broke the ice for Cedar with a foul shot, Erickson added a foul shot and Rasmussen dumped in two more 2-pointers to give the state, champs, a 11 to 1 lead. At this point Gary Mid-dleton Mid-dleton and Clark each connected on charity tosses and Gordon Sargent sank two quick field goals to put Cedar back into the ball game, 11-7, as the first period per-iod ended. As the second period opened Gleave and Rasmussen each scored from the floor to run the Monroe lead to 15-7, but Sargent made one of two foul shots and Craig Jones got a two-pointer to bring the score to 15 to 10. Shipp increased the lead to 17 to 15 but Sargent matched the basket with a jump shot. Shipp converted on two foul tries while Lawrence Ashdown was missing two for Cedar to make the score read 19 to 12. Rasmussen got a free-throw free-throw point and Shipp a field goal to make the score read 22 to 12, before Clark added two more points to Cedar's score. Gleave scored a two-pointer and Sargent got one to make it 24 to 15, before be-fore Magleby and Rasmussen sank two quick baskets to make the score 28 to 15. "Gary Middle-ton Middle-ton connected to make it 28 to 17, but Rasmussen matched this to keep the Rams in the lead 30 to 17. Before the half ended Clark connected twice .to close the gap to 30 to 21 at half time. As the teams came back for the second half Monroe caught fire again and ran the score to 37 to 21 on two field goals by Gleave and a field goal and foul shot by Shipp.Jones scored a two pointer, but Gleave matched it and after Sargent had tallied one point, Rasmussen shot Monroe into a 41 to 24 lead with another field goal. Shipp missed a foul shot but scored from the field to make it 43 to 24. Before the period ended end-ed however, Jones got a foul shot, Clark and Sargent each sank field goals and Melling made one of two foul tries to bring the score up to 43 to 30. As the final period opened Shipp made it 45 to 30 for Monroe, Mon-roe, but Jones got the two points back, and after Rasmussen made one of two foul tries, Clark sank a two-pointer to make the score read 47 to 34. Magleby made a charity toss and then Sargent and Jones scored from the field to cut Monroe's lead to 9 points, 47 to 38. Shipp connected to make it 11 points, 49 to 38, but Clark cut the marein back to 9 noints with a two-pointer. Shipp with a charity toss and a field goal and Rasmussen with two free throws , put the Rams into a 54 to 40 lead. Clark, working like a demon, de-mon, scored again to make it 54 to 42, but Rasmussen made it 55 to 42, before Jones added one point and Clark connected for his eighth field goal to make the final score read 55 to 45. Two major factors marked the difference between the two teams in this game, the Redmen's inability ina-bility to control the bank boards and the fact that the Monroe players made a much better per cent of their shots throughout the game.
