Show Generous Response Pushes Red Cross Drive Near Goal Full Support Urged As customary the people of, Iron county have responded gen-1 erously to the annual Red Cross fund campaign. County and city fund chairmen, Loran Hirschi, Mel Cowley and Browning Piatt are seeing the rewards of effective effec-tive organization and expect to reach the goal of $3400 in a few days. Practically every business house and professional office has responded liberally and most people have given individual support through home contributions. contribu-tions. Occasional reluctance to give has arisen from misunderstanding misunderstand-ing that personal contributions were being taken at the place of work. Only business and professional pro-fessional contributions are gathered gath-ered at the places of business while personal contributions and memberships are accepted in each home. This is in harmony with the congressional charter of the American Red Cross which created cre-ated it as the mercy arm of the U. S. military but left it to depend de-pend for its operating support on the American people. The American Ameri-can people are the Red Cross as their dollars go to the relief of suffering everywhere. Contrary to some people's thought 57 of the money collected col-lected in the 1952 fund campaign cam-paign will remain in Iron county coun-ty to finance an active program of home service for servicemen, first aid training, home nursing, water safety, disaster service, blood program, Junior Red Cross and some phases of civil defense. The other 43 goes to the national nation-al organization for its relief work among both servicemen and civilians. ci-vilians. Political, industrial and religious religi-ous leaders who have an overall picture of Red Cross activity are unanimous in their call- for support sup-port of the Red Cross. Typical of such support is the following quotation from a letter from the First Presidency of the L D S church, addressed to ward bishops bish-ops and intended to be read in Sunday services. "The American Red Cross under un-der takes its 1952 fund appeal in a time of continuing crisis and demands extraordinary efforts from every individual and group among us. The security and welfare wel-fare of the nation demand a great voluntary effort on the part of the entire American people. The Red Cross is not only one of the, greatest exponents of the volunteer vol-unteer spirit but one of its. primary pri-mary missions is to train people to help themselves and others in times of disaster, accident, sickness sick-ness and national emergency. "We feel that the service that the Red Cross is rendering is deserving de-serving of the fullest support, and we therefore urge the members mem-bers of the church to contribute liberally in response to their appeal ap-peal for funds to carry on this great mission of mercy." Signed by President David O. McKay, Stephen L. Richards and J. Reuben Reu-ben Clark. |
