Show Areaslcaters to receive honors By G. BRETT HART Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL Two of the area's top prep hockey stars have been recognized by the Salt Lake Amateur Hockey Association as 1991 outstanding senior athletes. Viewmont High School goalie Lance Oscarson and Bountiful senior defenseman Justin Jacobs will receive the Jeffrey Glass Robinson and Tim Hixson Memorial Awards tonight at the Salt Lake Golden Eagles Hockey Game. The Robinson Memorial Award is given annually to the most outstanding senior forwardgoaltender as selected by a committee representing the high school division of the SLC Amateur Hockey Association. Similarly, the Tim Hixson Memorial Award is presented to the most outstanding senior defenseman. According to association organizers, the awards are not based on hockey ability but are geared toward the athlete's successful endeavors in extra-curricular activities, ac-tivities, community service and scholarship. Oscarson began skating as a sophomore for the Vikings Vik-ings and currently holds the state record for the most saves in one game, logging over 90 against league powerhouse Brighton earlier this season. Jacobs began skating last season as a junior and has come on strong this season. The Tim Hixson award was instituted eight years ago after the death of Tim Hixson in a DUI-related accident. acci-dent. His father spearheaded the award in remembrance of his son's love for the the sport The Jeffrey Glass Robinson award was instituted by his mother three years ago after the Judge Memorial skater died in a one-car rollover in Salt Lake City. This is the first time either award has been presented to a Davis County skater. Both Oscarson and Jacobs will receive commemorative com-memorative plaques tonight on the ice at the Salt Lake Golden Eagles game in a ceremony scheduled for 7 p.m. OGDEN 7, DAVIS 2 BOUNTIFUL Internal dissension and lack of team play cost Davis High skaters two prep hockey contests last week, flashbacks of late-season difficulties suffered last year said coach Craig Walker. The dates for the double elimination tourney will not be announced an-nounced until all the teams have finished regular season play. Each prep team is classified according to talent Davis retained its 2A classification this year and will face teams including Olympus, Bountiful, Alta, Judge, Taylorsville and Hillcrest in a quest for the state title. |
