Show Bill of Rights kits available Classroom teachers planning to highlight the 200th anniversary of die Bill of Rights are invited to contact the Department of Elementary Education at Utah State University for a free instructional kit, said Dr. Jay Monson, department head. "In my opinion the study of the Bill of Rights and subsequent amendments as part of our American heritage is paramount," Monson explained. "I feel that in our classrooms in 1991, it is important to compare the interpretation of rights in recent times with what was contemplated by those who drafted and ratified the constitution's amendments. Particularly with the war in the Gulf, it is timely to examine our rights as we compare the forms and 'rights' of government govern-ment in foreign countries." Monson prepared the materials for elementary and middle school use. It includes a pre-test and post-test, instructional unit with background information, activities, ac-tivities, community involvement events and resources for students and teachers. He said offering the kit free is "part of the department's depart-ment's commitment to the celebration of the rights of all individuals." Bill of Rights Day is Dec. 15, 1991; however, activities ac-tivities concerning the document are ongoing all year, sponsored by the Constitution Bicentennial Commission, Commis-sion, legislators and others. To receive a copy of the classroom kit, teachers may send their name and address to Department of Elementary Elemen-tary Education, USU, Logan, Utah 84322-2805. |
