Show Timpview bumps Vikes out of 4A dreams By MARK EDDINGTON Staff Writer SALT LAKE CITY Timpview Timp-view outmuscled Viewmont inside the paint to post a 74-64 win Monday Mon-day in the semi-finals of the state 4-A basketball tournament at the University of Utah Special Events Center. The Thunderbird's victory and inside dominance overshadowed the fine performance of Viewmont's starting guard tandem of John Robinson and Jason Hynek. The pair combined for 3 1 points to keep the Vikings in the game, but in the final analysis it just wasn't enough as the T-birds frontline outscored Viewmont's 36 to 1 1. "They are just more physical then we are lamented Viewmont coach Clyde Nelson. "The shut us down inside and did a better job of taking care of the ball than we did." Taking care of the ball was a big problem for Viewmont. The Thunderbirds employed a pesky full-court press and trapping defense, forcing numerous turnovers turno-vers in the first period and resulting in easy fast break baskets. Viewmont View-mont had 1 1 turnovers to seven for Timpview, but many of the happen ed in the fust period and Timpview used that to open up a nine point advantage they would never fully relinquish. The score at the end of the first period was Timpview 20, Viewmont 13. Viewmont began to find the range from the perimeter in the second se-cond stanza. Tim p v ie w ' s B ob Beam son and Richard Jackson still ruled the paint, but back-to-back three-pointers by Robinson and Hynek brought their team closer. With under a minute to play in the half, the T-birds spread the offense and played for the last shot Timp view center Bob Beamson turned the ball over. Robison took the outlet pass, drove the right baseline made the basket and was fouled. Robinson made the free throw and Viewmont had clawed back into the game. Although Timpview led 33-28 at the half, the momentum seemed to be goin all going Viewmont's way. Unfortunately, momentum is always changing. At the start of the second half, Viewmont controlled the offensive boards but couldn't buy a basket The T-birds rolled off six unanswered points and eventually eventual-ly enjoyed a 13 point lead. View mont, using a full court press and last minute heroics of Hyneth, pulled pull-ed to within five, 67-62 with two minutes to play. But Timpview guards broke the press and found a wide-open Beamson under the basket for several key layups. With time running out, Viewmont View-mont was forced to foul. The Vikes had their opportunities when Timpview Timp-view repeatedly missed the front end of one-and-ones, but could not score on their own. "The key was the second half,' Nelson explained. "We had pulled to within five and had the ball to open the second half. When they opened with six straight points that was the ballgame.' Timpview had five players in double figures. Richard Jackson had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Beamson had 16, and Ryan Olson 14. Mat Bate man scored 12 and Doug Hen strom added 10. John Robinson had 16 for Viewmont. View-mont. Jason Hynek added 15. Forward For-ward Jared Peterson came off the bench to score 10 points. Viewmont had a 34-to-29 edge in rebounds.
