Show Thunderbird football recruits look good Gordon Rawlinson (6-3, 190) from Brigham Young University; and Don Embodie (6-0, 205) from L.A. Pierce. Among the five newly recruited defensive backs on campus, Greg Henderson Hen-derson (6-2, 190) from Scottsdale CC received all conference JC recognition. Bishop also expects good things from the other "DBs:" Babe Malifua (6-1, 185), Mira Costa (Calif.) JC; Tia Varonna (5-11, 185), West Los Angeles JC; and Russ Rox (6-1, 175) from Evanston, Wyo. Four new prospective quarterbacks are in school. "We've got a lot of physical talent among the four of them; we could easily use several of them in other positions very effectively," Bishop says. The four transfer quarterbacks include Renell Riley (6-0, 190), who was last year's most valuable player in the Arizona Junior College Conference while playing at Scottsdale CC; Rick Harrison (6-7, 215), a former high school ail-American ail-American who is transferring tran-sferring from the University of Utah; Jeff Hookano (5-11, 185), the nation's third leading passer while playing last year for Dixie; and Todd Tovey (5-11, 180), who played from Utah two seasons ago. Recruited running backs are Damon Leisis (5-10, 195), Moorpark (Calif.) JC, and Ronnie Hutchings (5-8, 218) from Evanston, Wyo. Only one defensive lineman is new. He's Jeff Aeck (6-4, 220) from L.A. Pierce. Dale Loveland (6-2, (6-2, 255), who started for SUSC as a freshman two years ago, is also back. Dave Smith (5-11, 190), also a regular two years ago, will be back as one of five new linebacker hopefuls. Others are Shawn Porter (6-2, 215), L.A. Pierce; Joe Houston (6-0, 195), Tehachapi, Calif.; Blake Woods (5-11, 210), Ricks; and Albert Chavez (5-11, 190), Nampa (Calif.) College. CEDAR CITY Offensive Of-fensive linemen and defensive backs were the major target areas for this year's Southern Utah State College football recruiting, and Caoch Jack Bishop figures he has landed the necessary talent. The Thunderbirds face , a major rebuilding of their offensive line, and the team is confronted with personnel needs at quarterback, linebacker and in the defensive backfield. "We've got a bundle (nearly 30 to be more precise) of new kids. They look like as good a bunch of transfers as we've ever had, but we are really going to miss spring drills this year. With this many new faces and with Northern Arizona University as our first game, we are going to have to make the very most of our early fall practices," Bishop explains. ex-plains. Last year SUSC finished with a 6-2 RMAC record good for second place and a 7-3 overall mark. Of the new" football prospects now on campus, cam-pus, at least eight earned all-conference honors in the their respective leagues. All conference offensive linemen include Stuart Brooks (6-4, 255, Salt Lake City), a tackle from Dixie; John Smith (6-5, 255, Brawley, Calif.), center from Imperial Valley JC; Dan Schell (6-2, 265), tackle from Dixie College; and Joe Locavera (6-1, 255), guard from Phoenix JC. Other promising offensive of-fensive linemen are Bruce Stewart (6-3, 240), Los Angeles Pierce College; and Don Herman Her-man (6-0, 245), Nampa (Calif.) College. Two all-conference receivers are now enrolled at SUSC. They are Orrin Allen (6-2, 190) from Ricks and Chi Chi Bengochia (5-11, 185) from Dixie. Three other prospective prospec-tive receivers are new to the T-Bird camp. They are Bob Buckner (6-1, 195) from L.A. Pierce |
