Show B2 April 8, 1982 THE RECORD 93 students compete i Sterling Scholar contest scheduled April 15 ST GEORGE Ninety three students representing eleven high schools and five districts will compete for awards and honors in the Fourth Annual Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar competition, com-petition, in the auditorium at Dixie High School April 15. Judging of portfolios in 12 separate categories will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Dixie College. Interviews will begin at 1 p.m. with awards to be presented at the Sterling Scholar Program at 7 p.m. that evening. Finalists who will be involved in the final competition are from the following high schools: Beaver, Bryce Valley, Cedar City, Dixie, Enterprise, En-terprise, Escalante, Hurricane, Kanab, Panguitch, Parowan and Valley. The twelve categories of the competition include English and literature, Performing Arts, Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Foreign Language, Vocational Education, Homemaking, Business Education, Music, Visual Arts and General Scholarship. "The fourth year's response in this com petition has been most gratifying," according to Arliss W. Jensen, chairman of the Southwest South-west Utah Sterling Scholar Committee, The cooperation of school patrons, school boards, superintendents, high schools, school coordinators, the Utah State Office of Education, the local news media, Dixie College, and Southern Utah State College has been most outstanding, according to Jensen. Each of the 93 finalists will be judged from achievements and awards compiled in their Michael Gallup will appear as the pirate king in the upcoming Opera A La Carte production of "The Pirates of Penzance." The production will be April 15 at 8 p.m. in the Cedar High School auditorium. portfolios and interviews in-terviews with the judges. A winner and two runner-up in each of the 12 categories will be announced at the evening program, and each will be given a Sterling Scholar Pin. Each winner will receive $200 cash award and each runner-up a $100 cash award to be used at a college or university of his or her choice. Colleges and univer- sities in Utah are offering i full tuition scholarships to winners, and many are offering part tuition scholarships to runner-up.' runner-up.' Beginning at 5 p.m. a banquet will be conducted con-ducted to honor the Southwest Utah Sterling i Scholar finalists and their parents and-or gardians. The master m of ceremonies for the banquet will be Dr. Karl Brooks, Dixie College's vice president of Community Com-munity Services and coordinator for the Southwest South-west Utah Sterling Scholar Program. Dr. Van L. Bushnell, ! Associate Professor, business and vocational 1 director at Southern Utah : State College, will in- troduce the guest speaker. Dr. Gerald R. Sherrat, president, Southern Utah State College. A real highling at the program will be having Paul James, Executive Sports Director, KSL TV News, as the Master of Ceremonies for the Sterling Scholar Program. Henry J. Jolley, superintendent of schools in the Garfield School District, will introduce in-troduce the Master of Ceremonies. |
