They started preparing for the nationals way back in August when they spent two weeks at the University of Arizona debate workshop." The commitment to high-level national performance, the coach indicated, has its price. "These students have sacrificed their weekends, they have spent a minimum of 25 hours per week in preparation, they've had to work extra hard to maintain their grade point averages, and they've spent much of their summers at debate institutes," Smith said. Two teams are representing SUSC at the Florida State University tournament. According to M.L. Smith, SUSC forensic coach,, this means a lot in itself. "In the first place," he said, "SUSC has never been invited to the senior debate nationals. By having two teams entered, en-tered, we're immediately placed among the elite multi-entry schools such as Baylor, University of Utah, Northwestern, Samford, and the University of Kansas." "But the most exciting thing of all," he added matter-of-factly, "Is that " we've got the talent to win." SUSC's strongest chance at national honors rests on the team of Jerri Lynn Price and Chris Kerecman, the junior-senior junior-senior duo who finished first at senior districts with a 7-1 record, and broke as one of the top 16 teams at the prestigious Heat of America Tournament. Tour-nament. Price is a communications com-munications major, business minor, at SUSC. A consistent winner for SUSC, the 1979 Bingham High School graduate has , also represented Southern Utah at the novice nationals. Kerecman, Utah's 1980 Truman Scholar, will graduate from SUSC May 29 with a double major in communications and political science. He has also been a constant forensic achiever at SUSC, representing the college in the novice and individual events nationals. His sights after graduation are on law school. The second team to represent SUSC at the NDT Nationals is Jackie Clegg, a sophomore, and Chris Lathrop, a junior. "If all goes well, this team could do very well for the Thunderbirds," Smith said. Lathrop and Clegg finished fourth in district senior NDT. They finished fifth at the Junior NDT Nationals last year, and have been consistent winners for SUSC this season. Clegg has a double |
