Show SUSC golf team takes sixth "We've got to do some serious work to get our team average below the '80 barrier', "Tom Kingsford, Southern Utah State College golf coach said after last week's Spectrum Classic at Bloomington Hills! "We certainly didn't have one of our better meets last week." SUSC finished sixth among seven teams Friday and Saturday at the Classic at Bloomington Hills. Utah State University won the meet with a team score of 748. Following in order were Grand Canyon (793), Western State (807), USU No. 2 (811), Dixie (812), SUSC (816), and Fort Lewis (851). Doug Lee (sophomore, Boulder City, Nev.) shot a 160 over the 36 holes to lead SUSC. "Lee is probably our steadiest golfer right now, and he is starting to help us more and more," Kingsford said. Following Lee in the SUSC scoring were Dean Cooper and Erik Lane with 164s, Scott Stephens and Jerold Roberts with 166s, and Kevin Bundy with a 167. The Thunderbirds will take a week off from competition before swinging back into action Apr. 10 and 11 at Grand Junction, Colo., against Mesa College. The meet is expected to give SUSC some clues about the strengths of Kocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams. The KM AC favorite is University of Southern Colorado, with Western State and SUSC figured to battle for second place. Mesa is of unknown quality. "We'll know more about Mesa after the meet over there," Kingsford indicated. |
