Show K-Mart construction underway - at last By BRUCE LEE Record Editor The standing joke concerning the imminent construction of a K-Mart store in Cedar City went the way of all good jokes Monday with a groundbreaking ground-breaking ceremony at the site on south Main Street. For; almost a year now, the standard response to questions concerning when the construction would begin has been "two weeks." However, Cedar City Mayor Jack Sawyers mounted a piece of heavy equipment and put the joke, and rumors that the long awaited store wasn't coming, to rest by moving the first bit of earth. On hand for the ceremonial groundbreaking ground-breaking were officials from Western Rock Company of Cedar City, which has been awarded the contract for site preparation; from MGM Construction of Salt Lake City, which has the general contract from the developer; and from Cedar City. Grant Muhlestein, president of MGM Construction, pointed out that 95 percent per-cent of the subcontracts had or would be awarded to area businesses. With construction beginnning now, K-Mart K-Mart is aiming at a late October or early November opening, said Muhlestein. The major portion of the development will be the 60,841 square foot variety store, with a drive through tires, batteries bat-teries and accessories addition. Also planned, said Muhlestein, is Skaggs, Alpha Beta and several smaller shops. |
