Show Thinclads geared up Men looking up Davidson hopeful m. v Salt Lake City) picked up a second in the long jump with a leap of 17-2'i; she has already qualified for the national meet. Derek Lamb (freshman, Orderville), and Russ Eyre (junior, Star Valley, Wy) lowered the mark to 3:28.2. "We'll lower that time significantly before the season is over," Adams predicted. The third bright spot for the SUSC squad is the return to action of weight man Joe Wells. "Joe has thrown much further than he did last week, but we are just glad that his ankle is strong enough for him to compete again. He'll be worth points to us from here on out," Adams smiled. Expected to be strong events for SUSC Saturday are the 400 meter hurdles and the long jump. Three and possibly four hurdlers could score points in the 400 meters. The long jump boasts three competitors who are capable of beating 23 feet. Millecam, Palmer, Eyre, and Kris Glover (freshman, Kanab) can all get under 55.6 in the 400 meter hurdles, according ac-cording to Coach Adams. Twins Aaron and Adrian Sampson (freshmen, Salt Lake City) and Bill Davis (sophomore, Spanish Fork) are the squad's top long jumpers. "Of course we'll be counting on points from Keenan Hart in the 5,000, Bryan in the pole vault, and Robert Shirts in the javelin," Adams said. Weather is the key to improved performances that Southern Utah State College's Coach Ben Davidson is hoping for from his women's track team. "Almost all of our people are doing better and better, but we look for some big improvements im-provements in our next meet if we can get just a little help from the weather," Davidson said. The Thunderbird women will not have a meet this week. Next action will come Apr. 11 at the Riverside (Calif.) Invitational. The SUSC plan is to work hard on technique and conditioning con-ditioning for the extra week and shoot for big improvements at the lower altitude competition. com-petition. "One of our goals in California will be to qualify Mary Damiani for the national meet in the 800 meters," Davidson explained. "We might also get a couple of our high jumpers Janet Jorgensen and Mechele Hebberd up close to the national qualifying standard." Damiani (senior, Chicago Heights, 111) qualified for nationals in the 1500 meters last week at Weber State with a 4:50.05 clocking. She finished second. Chris Whetton (junior, North A preview of the 1981 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference track and field championships will be provided Saturday at Gunnison, Colo. Southern Utah State College will be among the several RMAC schools at the meet which will be hosted by Western State College. Western New Mexico University is the only conference school not scheduled to compete at Gunnison. "There are three major things we would like to accomplish at Gunnison this week," Boyd Adams, SUSC coach, explained. "We want to get acquainted with Western State's new all-weather track and the other facilities. We also want to get the feel of' competing com-peting at an altitude of 7,000 feet, and we want to get a look at the strengths of the other conference schools." The' official RMAC meet will be held on the same Western State track May 9. Except for three bright spots, Adams felt that bad weather frustrated any Thunderbird hopes for improved performances per-formances last week at the Weber State College Invitational Meet. ,,1 t.w was. cold and snowy; conditions were simply bad," Adams said. "We accomplished almost nothing, except a few sore muscles. Except Ex-cept for Bruce Bryan in the pole vault- and our 1600 meter relay team, all our times were relatively bad;:. but- so were everyone else's." Bryan (junior, Apple Valley, CA) cleared 15-6 in the pole vault despite the cold and the high winds.- With some good weather and time to move to a longer and heavier pole, Adams figures that; Bryan is capable of equalling or exceeding his own conference con-ference record of 16-6. SUSC's 1600 meter relay record tumbled for the second time this year at the Weber meet. Kevin Millecam (junior, Vernal), Ver-nal), Rick . Palmer .(senior, :. Bountiful), |
