Show V IdotoiroaL Record applauds Federation vote The Iron County Record applauds the recent decision by the Southwest Utah Cooperative Power Federation to "explore" the possibility of negotiations with Utah Power & Light Co. , The decision to carefully approach UP&L concerning its offer to sell municipalities their individual distribution systems, if UP&L is first successful in its purchase attempts from CP National, is based on what is best for the citizens of the area. The Iron County Record has not taken a stand on the controversial con-troversial power issue, but we feel that whatever action is taken should be in the best interest of the citizens of the area: the decision, over the objections of some Federation members, does that. As citizens and as spenders of the taxpayers' money that is their duty. ' The decision does two things. First, it opens, a crack, another door, another possibility for the southwest Utah citizens. Perhaps the explorations and the hoped for negotiations will never bear fruit; perhaps they will. Second, the decision shows that the Federation is acting in good faith. Accusations and innuendoes by UP&L and CPN can be laid at least partially to rest by this act. The Federation is willing tatalk, maybe nothing else. But members want to see if CTv possibiity of an agreement. 1 Also, such an action certainly should shed a little bettr the Federation before the Public Service CommiT V -p- a With the prediction of Steven Randall, formerly sty jfSC the Committee of Consumer Services, that, if soim, happen quickly the PSC would allow the sale to go through, that good light is needed. On the other hand, we were slightly disappointed in the actions of some of the individual members of the Federation. Comments by Federation President Carl Palmer and others that the group shouldn't even negotiate didn't have in mind the interest of those of us who have to live with the outcome of this fight. Certainly the Federation doesn't have to "sell out" to UP&L. But they should certainly approach the issue with an open mind and very carefully, as the members all stated. But to not even look into the possibility, however remote, of inexpensive power for the area is defeating the entire purpose of the group. ' |
