Show Sun doesn't shine for Redmen nine By LYNETTE SAWYER Record Reporter The Dixie Sunshine Tournament was indeed a disappointment for the Cedar High School Kedmen baseball team. According to Coach Dave Jenson, lack of hitting was the major reason lor the team's performance. "We just weren't hitting the ball." he commented. The Cedar High team batted at .269 as a whole in the tournament. ' However, there were some individual standouts. stan-douts. Kevin Garrett had six at bats and produced hits three times to finish the tournament with a .500 average. The Redmen catcher, Neil Bladen, batted .400 for the tournament while Lyle Harrison batted an impressive .333. "We really beat ourselves." our-selves." stated Jenson. "We played pretty! good in our first two games but definitely not against Fayson, and Payson was the worst team we played." The CHS squad played three different teams in the three day tourney. The first game was against the team from Bountiful and the Reds lost a close one with a 4-3 score. The Redmen used three pitchers in this contest. David Carter started, Kevin Garrett came on in the second and Bruce Amador in the sixth. Between them they allowed five hits. CHS did not score until the final inning. Bryce Gubler had walked, as had Don Adams, when Lyle Harrison stepped to the plate and powered the ball out of the park for Cedar's only three points of the game. Bountiful had four points by this time and held on to win it. The second game pitted Cedar High against the American Fork Cavemen. Once again Cedar was narrowly defeated. This time 3-2. Cedar's first run cariie in the third inning when Gary Alger's triple scored Kyle Kingsford who had arrived on base after being pitched four balls. In the fourth inning CHS scored again as doubles by Garrett then Gubler produced a run. Gubler pitched ithe entire live inning game giving up seven bits and three runs. Fayson and Cedar tangled in the third game, Fayson winning it by three. The final score was 8 - 5 . Kevin Garrett gave up live runs to take the loss on tin; mound lor CHS. Garrett had two strikeouts belore Bruce Amador came on in relit'!. Amador enlered the game in the lilth inning to give up three runs and get two strikeouts. CHS started oil well, getting two runs in Ihe lirsl inning. David Carter got a double and then he and Bryce Gubler scored due to errors by the Fayson team. David Carter was able to' score alter hitting a single in the second inning. in-ning. Kevin Garrett led off the lourth inning with a home run for another C II S point. Gary Arger sliced out a single In the seventh, which also resulted in a run due to error-prone play by the Lions. Although the tournament tour-nament was disappointing disap-pointing lor CHS, it did provide them with some much needed experience belore beginning region competition this week. A key factor lor Cedar's success this season will lx' hitting. They can only achieve if their big bats produce, said Jenson. |
