Bladen was a standout in the home victory im lut'sday. Reds squeak by Dinos The baseball team from Carbon High School traveled southward to a blustery Cedar City Tuesday only to face defeat in an extra-inning thriller. Few fans stayed throughout the entire . game, due not only to the length of the game, but to the weather. The scheduled seven-inning game turned into a long ten-innings and as each inning came and went, the wind got colder, and the bleachers became more and more bare. Cedar got off to an early lead as they scored five runs in the first inning. Kelly Peterson claimed a double, while David Carter, Neil Bladen and Shane Baggs had all managed free trips to first base. One run had already scored when Lyle Harrison stepped to the plate with bases loaded and rapped the ball over the fence for a grand slam. Cedar scored again in the third inning. in-ning. Bladen, Baggs, and Harrison all managed to take another trip around the bases, and Cedar had eight runs was again in trouble, and hud allowed two runs when Jenson called on Kevin Garrett to quell the uprising. Garrett came on to strike out the Carbon batter, then give up a double that scored two more, before striking out the final two batters to finish up the inning. As Cedar laced the bottom of the sixth, they found their six run lead gone, and were trailing by one. The first two Redmen players were out, on a ground . ball back to the pitcher and a fly ball. Kevin Garrett then slashed out a single. He was advanced to second base as Neil Bladen received a base on balls. Garrett then drew a pickoff attempt from Carbon's pitcher, and the throw was wild. Garrett fell to the bag - in an effort to get back and Bladen had nearly reached second base before Garrett was up and running to third. Fortunately, the throw was late, and all runners were sale. It turned out to be somewhat of a counted, however, and the game went into extra innings all tied up at 9. Carbon scored in neither their eighth, ninth, or tenth at bats. Cedar was also scoreless in the eighth and ninth, but pulled together a run in the bottom of the tenth to win it all. Alger led off the final inning with a walk, Peterson then hit a grounder that lorced him out at first, but Alger advanced ad-vanced a base. David Carter also drew a walk, and once again, the Dinos changed pitchers. Kevin Garrett then hit a double off the new pitcher, and although the Redmen runner rounded all the bases, he was tagged out at home plate. Neil Bladen was intentionally , walked;,1:,,; With Carter, Bladen, and Garrett occupying the three bases, Shane Baggs came on with a long single up the middle to score Carter, and the Reds won the ciose game by the one run. under their belts. As the two teams began the fifth inning, the Redmen led by a score of 8-2, 8-2, Carbon's two runs coming in the second inning off Cedar pitcher Bryce Gubler. Carbon then began to attack Gubler and racked up three more scores. Redmen Coach Dave Jenson had David Carter warming up in the bull pen. Carter had been a doubtful pitcher since being injured at the Dixie Sunshine Sun-shine Tournament. Gubler finally got out of the inning as he left a Carbon player swinging. In the bottom of the fifth, Cedar was retired in order; three up, three down. The sixth inning was another satisfying one for the Carbon squad as they scored four more points. Gubler wasted effort, however, as the next CHS batter grounded out to end the inning. Carbon's seventh inning produced no runs, and it 'looked as though things could be over for the Redmen, as they too were slow to hit the bull in the seventh. Harrison led off for the Redmen, and ground out to the second basemen. "Kyle Kingsford then drew a walk and stole second, putting him in scoring position. Bryce Gubler popped up to the catcher cat-cher his turn at but. Gary Alger also drew a bnse-on-bulls, and Carbon chose this time to call out a new pitcher. Kelly Peterson then stepped to the plate and lined a single up the middle to score Kingsford. Peterson attempted to stretch the hit into a double and was thrown out at second base. The run |
