Show Cedar Redmen open Baseball Season with 9-1 Victory over Red Devils Cedar City Redmen had to travel to St. George to play their opening game of the 1980 Region Six baseball schedule, but it proved to be a productive move as the Redmen downed the visiting Red Devils of Springville 9-1. The game was played Friday night at St. George. Tuesday the Redmen went on the road to Provo to tangle with the Bulldogs of Provo High School in the second outing of the season. The Bulldogs were defeated 5-0 in St. George by the Dixie Flyers. David Carter went the distance on the mound for Coach Dave Jenson and his Redmen giving up only four hits to the visiting Red Devils. Carter picked up eight strikeouts over the seven innings of play. Springville captured their only run of the game in the top half of the first inning of play to hold a brief 1-0 lead, but the Redmen bounced back with five runs in the bottom of the frame and added four more tallies int he second on their way to the lopsided victory. Top hitter for the Redmen was Kyle Kingsford who belted out a double and a triple his first two times at bat. He was also credited with three RBI's. Kingsford was the designed hitter for the day. After giving up the run in the top of the first the Redmen came in the bottom of the frame to take command com-mand of the game. Gary Alger and David Carter walked to open the frame and Alger came on to score on a single by Bruce Gubler. Carter came on to score on a ball thrown into center field on a Gubler steal and Gubler came on to score on a ground out to shortstop by David Corry. Cary Larson walked and : came on to score on Kingsford's . triple and Kingsford was the fifth man across the plate on a single by Neal Bladen, the catcher. In the bottom of the second the Redmen started with three walks to load the bases. Alan Cardon, Alger and Randy Soderquist all drew free passes. Carter singled to send Cardon home with the first run of the frame but Alger was forced at third to record an out. Gubler was hit by a pitched ball and Cary Larson singled to drive Soderquist home. Carter and Gubler both scored in the frame on Kingsford's double. |
