Show SUSC Debaters defeated in Nationals Southern Utah State College debaters got their first taste of defeat and an especially bitter one, at the Novice Nationals held recently at Chicago's Northwestern North-western University. "After the first day of competition, Jerri Lynn Price and Chris Lathrop were sitting pretty, a top seeded '. team," says M. L. Smith, SUSC forensics coach, "but on the second day they lost three straight power rounds to teams from Dartmouth College, the Univesity of Redlands and the University of Virginia." With a 4-4 record, the SUSC team barely missed , breaking into the octa-f inals. A 5-3 record v would have pushed them into the finals, Smith said. - ' Another Thunderbird team, Denise Brooks and Scott Pullan, finished in nationals with a 3-5 record, defeating teams from Louisville and Penn State before going on a losing streak themselves. 11 "There were 65 universities univer-sities represented at Nor: thwestern, somewhere 'rieaf 85 teams," Smith said.'with the vast majority of schools from the east coast." "We lost in the nationals," he said, "because we were up against eastern schools and because we lacked the superior evidence other teams had." ' Brooks, Price and Pullan are all SUSC freshmen, all 1979 graduates of Bingham High School. : The fourth novice debater, Lathrop, is a sophomore from Orem who recently placed fifth with his partner Vickie Green, in national junior debate competition. |
