Show lOOKING BACK 50 years ago W. H. Leigh stated, although it was late, he was going to keep his promise and have an opening day for his new furniture store and hotel and give the people of Cedar City and Iron County a chance to see their beautiful building. (It was located about where the Prudential Building and parking lot is now.) It was a building that would do credit to Salt Lake City. It was known to furniture dealers as the largest ground floor and one of the most convenient stores in the state. That was going some for a city of four thousand. The hotel was something different inside and out. And every bed in the new hotel had a Simmons Beauty Rest Mattress and a Simmons Ace Spring which made the beds second to none in any hotel in the state. Every citizen in Cedar City at least owed it to themselves to inspect the building during open house on Saturday, March 31 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. A little favor was to be given to all the ladies. It was noticed that just a mile and a quarter south of . town on the main highway, there was a level place at the side which was called "lovers loop", and any night, may be seen several autos filled with lovers. And... just a couple of hundred yards further south was a place . called "bootleggers booth", where practically any night, so it was reported, lovers of moonshine could meet dispensers of the fluid who hail from Nevada way. Walter K. Granger, member of the board of regents of the U.A.C. informed the Record that Mr. Oberhansley would be retained next year as director of the Branch Agricultural College (now SUSC). by Dorothy Rogers - .. . |
