Several students and former students of Southern Utah State College will be competing Saturday in the "Fourth Annual Boxing and State Arm Wrestling Championships." The boxing and arm wrestling competition will start at 8 p.m. Saturday in War Memorial Fieldhouse. Joint sponsors are the Cedar City Boxing Club and the Iron County Sheriff's Department. Admission will be $4 lor ringside seats, $3 general admission, $2 for students with activity cards, and $1 for anyone under 12 years old. "We think we'll have several promising young boxers competing," Kent Hoyt, Cedar Boxing Club, says. "We will have boxers from the Dixie Boxing Club, the Kartab Boxing Club, and possibly from the Hurricane Boxing Club." Matches haven't been drawn up yet, but previous competition among the clubs promises good bouts. Both defending champion arm wrestlers are set to attempt to keep their titles. Lane Martino, SUSC ail-American ail-American football player, is . the defending men's open , ihampion Jisl; ryoar,, he barely defeated Joe Wells, also an SUSC football player, to earn his second straight title. The defending women's open champion is Fran Oldroyd, Cedar City. Arm wrestling competition com-petition is broken down into weight classes, in additon to the open division. "We are planning lor about 10 amateur boxing matches," Hoyt said. Among the hopefuls from the Cedar City Boxing Club is a 14-year-old heavyweight, who Hoyt says, "has more promise than any lighter I've ever been associated with." The impressive young heavyweight is David Piper from Beryl Junction, in western Iron County. "He holds his own very well against much older and more experienced heavyweights," Hoyt says. "He's beginning to improve his technique now, and I'm really excited about his future." Other promising fighters from the Cedar City Club include a pair of welterweights, welter-weights, Tex Carter and Nolan Zunaga, from Cedar City High School, and a light heavyweight (Larry Fullmer) and heavyweight |
