I l , ?t 1 ' in ifc ill-' " Ju f&juuaud Eighty-two students representing nine high schools and five school disticts will compete for awards and honors in the Second Annual Southwest South-west Utah Sterling Scholar competition com-petition to be held int he Auditorium on Dixie College's Campus on Thursday, April 10. 1980. Judging of portfolios in 12 separate categories will begin at 10:00 a.m. and interviews will begin at 1 .00 p.m. with awards to be presetned at the Sterling Scholar Program at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Finalists who will be involved in the final competition are from the following high schools: Beaver, Bryce Valley, Cedar City, Enterprise, Hurricane, Kanab, Panguitch, Parowan, and Valley. The twelve categories of the competition include the following: English and Litrature, Performing ARts, Mathematics, Social Science, Foreign Language, Visual Arts, Vocational Education, Homemaking, Business Education, Music, and General Scholarship. "The second year's response in this competition has been most gratifying," according to Arliss W. Jensen, Chairman of the Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar Committee and director of the Southwest Educational Development Center. The cooperation of school boards, superintendents, high schools, school coordinators, the Utah State Office of Education, the local news media, Dixie College, and Soutehrn Utah State College has been most out- each of the 12 categories will be announced an-nounced at the evening program, and each will be given a Sterling Scholar Pin. Each finalist will receive an embossed Sterling Scholar Certificate. Cer-tificate. Each winner receives a $200 cash award and each runner-up a $100 cash award to be used at a college or university of his or her choice. Most colleges and universities in Utah have offered full tuition scholarships to winners, and many have offered part tuition scholarships to runners-up. This year, there will be a special dinner to honor the Southwest Utah Sterling Scholar finalists and their parents. The Master of Ceremonies for the dinner will be Dr. Karl Brooks, Dixie College's Coordinator for the Sterling Scholar Program. The guest speaker will be LaVell Edwards, BYU's outstanding football coach. Another addition and highlight to the program will be to have Bob Welti, KSL's meterologist for many years, as the Master of Ceremonies for the Sterling Scholar Program on Thursday evneing. Lavor Chaffin, the Education Editor from the Deseret News will be the guest speaker and talk about the Sterling Scholar Program. Last year some newspapers published the lists of the finalists, the Sterling Scholar Program, and additional ad-ditional information that was listed in the printed program. A copy of the information that will be included in this year's printed program has been enclosed for your use.
