In chess, ties are broken by determining deter-mining the strength of the competition faced by the players; there are about six different systems In use for breaking ties among Individual players, some more selective than others, but all of which generally result in approximately the same final ranking. The order in which the various systems will be used is decided upon before the tournament begins. Only four of these systems are realistically usable in breaking ties between teams. In the Vernal-Richfield case the first tiebreak system did not eliminate the tie, leaving the two teams still deadlocked. However, the second system resolved the tie in favor of Richfield, but by only 'a point, 82 to 81.5, and the Vernal team had to settle for the second place trophy in the closest race in the tournament. Ten teams competed in this division. Cory Curtis' performance placed him 5th among the approximately 50 8th graders who competed in this event, which drew 264 participants from grades 2-9, representing 31 schools. The 1983 tournament is tentatively scheduled for March 24-25 at this year's playing site, the Orem Community Recreation Center. |
