Show Kennedy Highway Dear Editor: I read your article in last week's Expires, Ex-pires, and I think they should name the new highway to Bonanza "The Kennedy Highway" alter Tom Kennedy who first settled in that area. Long before the area was referred to as Red Wash, it was called Kennedy Flat and Kerun-dy Basin. Tom Kennedy was a cowboy and horse rancher in that area. He was also boss of the first crew of men who drilled assessment holes in the area for gilsonite, along with Dean Gurr, Bill Okley, and Av David. Ver-nal's Ver-nal's first stageline stoppx'd at the Kennedy Ken-nedy Station, and Jess Kichens was the station manager. So many of the original names in that area are being changed and the history of the area forgotten. For instance, Major Ma-jor Powell named the area we now know as Split Mountain, Green River Gorge, and the original Red Wash is not where it is now, but on Blue Mountain. What is now called Red Wash was so named by a conservation corp w ho built some reservoirs in the area. I'm an oldtimer to that area, my father settled here in 1905, and I would like to see some of the old names left on some of these things to preserve the history of the area. If you would give my recommendation recommenda-tion for a name of the new highway to the County Commissioners or whoever will name the highway, I would appreciate ap-preciate it. Sincerely.
