Show Duane AAerrell is number two hitter CEU team Duane Merrell, a 1976 Uintah High School graduate, is the number two hitter on the College of Eastern Utah's baseball team in Price with a batting average of .370 as of April 16. Nicky Valles is the leading hitter at .400. Steve Tapp, an infielder from Brighton High, has the only mound victory. The College of Eastern Utah acquired its first win of the season when they nipped Utah State University in Logan, 3-2, during the week of April 6-12. The Aggies came back to win the second game, 8-6. The Eagles also dropped two games to Brigham Young University's junior varsity, 8-6, 12-1. CEU gained an early lead of 2-0 due to base hits by Uintah's Duane Merrell and Micky Valles. The Aggies cut the Eagles' lead to 2-1, but CEU added another run for a 3-1 advantage. Utah State gained a run in the final inning to make the score, 3 to 2. Steve Tapp was the winning pitcher. The Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second game, but Utah State University outscored CEU, 7 to 0, the rest of the way to win the contest, 8 to 6. CEU fell behind 8 to 1 in the first game with BYU, but the Eagles scored five runs to narrow the BYU lead to two runs. Frank Julia no smashed the ball for two hits, which included a homer and Nicky Valles and Duane Merrell continued to hit the baseball well. BYU blasted pitches by hurler, Jim Hansen in the nightcap and he was replaced by Chris Chiaretta. Duane Merrell followed Chiaretta to finish up the game. |
