V ' '' ' ' ED ROWLEY COLOR YOUR YARD With a little extra effort, you can grow petunias that will make those old-fashioned old-fashioned ones proud to be the ancestors of your modern ones. And nothing else will give such a color range in your garden over such a long period of time. Good plants from High Valley Nursery will give you a head start. Mixing Mix-ing Cascade Soil Aid into your soil will make it take and hold water better. It will also make it fluffier and easier to work. Work in a good fertilizer, such as Ortho General Purpose Plant Food. When you water petunias, soak the soil thoroughly every five to seven days. You will need to water more often the first week or two. As the plants get too long and have less flowers in mid-summer, don't be afraid to cut them back. In a few weeks they will be well branched and blooming bloom-ing thickly again. If an early frost destroys the blossoms, don't pull up the plants. They will still be alive and may produce a new Indian Summer splash of color. PLANT LAWNS NOW! High Valley Nursery has several types of seed mixtures available. It's easier to start a lawn before it gets hot. CABBAGE PLANTS At High Valley Nursery we have sturdy plants that will tolerate frost. Lots of people are already planting them. We also have CAULIFLOWER, BROCCOLI AND BRUSSLE SPROUTS. FRUIT TREES YOU WILL FIND MANY SPECIALLY SELECTED HARDY VARIETIES WHEN YOU VISIT HIGH VALLEY NURSERY Stark Trees Bear Fruit Since 1816. Fruit Tree Center v Remember The Old Petunias? Dad had a way of making me feel excited ex-cited about things. He did it when he brought home the first petunia seed. A lady had given him some from her garden. He said that if we planted them along the ditch bank where the water from the well went to bur garden, that they'd start growing and cover the whole bank with flowers. I could hardly wait. And it seemed as ' though the seed would never come up. But they did, and they grew thick. Between Bet-ween my other adventures with my younger brother, playing with frogs in the damp sand at the creek, eating wild grapes from the vine that climbed the old oak tree by the well, and all the other important things that little boys do, I checked the petunias to see if they were blooming yet. Then one day it was there. It was the most beautiful sight I had ever seen. One lovely pale pink flower that looked like it might be a trumpet on which fairies could play tunes to dance by. That one was followed by others, mostly most-ly pale pink or lavender. It was almost a greater thrill than a six year old boy could stand. I visited the petunias often. Sometimes I sat for a long time, smelling smell-ing of their fragrance, feeling their soft trumpets and wondering over their beauty. Grandma showed me how to pull out the little trumpets and suck the sweet nectar from the small end. I was unaware that people, called plant breeders, were working to make petunias even more beautiful. Along came Celestial Rose and Fire Chief. Then, in 1952, Ballerina became the first hybrid grandiflora petunia. It was followed a year later by Camanche, the first red hybrid multiflora . Many exotic new comers followed and petunias would never be the same. Every so often some of my fancy hybrid petunias go to seed and plants grow where the seeds fell. The thrills of my youth return for a brief visit, when one of those plants produces an old fashioned petunia that has been hiding within the seeds of the modern hybrid. PETUNIAS ARE READY! These plants can tolerate frost. If you plant them now, they will grow a lot of branches during the cool spring weather and really burst into bloom as it warms up.
