Show Jerry Allred competed in 12 laps of long distance running in the Rangely Invitational, Saturday and all he received for his work was a second place ribbon in the mile. Allred, who is an experienced mile and 2 mile runner, captured first places in both long distance runs in dual meets with Tooele and Cyprus and in the Palisade Invitational, Invita-tional, but Rangely Invitational officials of-ficials said he did not place in the 2 mile event because he didn't complete all eight laps. Uintah's Allred won a number of long distance runs as a freshman and this year as a sophomore. An experienced runner such as Allred runs all eight laps, but the officials didn't believe him and he didn't place in the event. Many coaches, fans and runners disagreed with the officials. When asked to comment on Jerry Allred not being awarded second place, Rick Phillips, Uintah's head track coach, remarked, "Nobody got his time. They said he wasn't second. They said he got lapped, and they said he never passed Rifle's Whittington, who was given second place. It's kind of funny fun-ny and strange that they would lose the second place winner. Allred was 20 yards behind Stewart when the Glenwood Glen-wood Springs trackster crossed the finish line for first place and Allred was 50 yards ahead of Whittington of Rifle. Allred passed Whittington with about l'2 laps to go." Uintah's assistant coach, Curg Belcher, had an eight-lap time of 10:29 for Jerry Allred. Stewart of Glenwood Springs captured first .place with a time of 10:26.3 and Rifle's Whittington had a time of 10:40. If Uintah Uin-tah had been awarded eight points for Allred's second place they would have edged Glenwood Springs, 55 to 53, for second place. Uintah's Jerry Allred stated, "I know I took second. The only kid that beat me was Stewart of Glenwood Springs. They fouled me up by not giving me second place. They said I was a lap behind. I passed Whittington of Rifle with about 500 yards to go. The first place winner, Stewart, was never more than 40 yards ahead of me. I ran every lap. My time (10:29) was fast enough that there was no way they could have lapped me." The officials said that Jerry Allred had been lapped and that's why he wasn't given second place or any place. Allred remarked, "They fired the gun for the final lap and one of the officials said 'The guy in front of you isn't the leader: The next guy is the leader.'" Some people might think that Rick Phillips and Jerry Allred are just being sore losers. However, Union High School's track coaches, Jay Omer and Brad Monks, completely agree with Rick Phillips and Jerry Allred that the Uintah trackster nabbed second place. Stewart of Glenwood Springs placed first in the 2 mile and Whittington of Rifle Ri-fle was given second place. Corman of Roaring Fork placed third and Tomlin. Steamboat Springs, placed fourth and Alma Hall, Union, netted fifth place. Jay Omer and Brad Monks said Jerry Allred finished ahead of their own runner, run-ner, Alma Hall. Union and Uintah are arch-rivals and there is nothing the Cougars like better than beating a Uintah Uin-tah Ute. When Union High School and Uintah High School were in the same class, most fans from Roosevelt would root for Uintah to lose in the state tournament. tour-nament. So if there was any chance that Alma Hall of Union might have beaten Uintah's Jerry Allred then Jay Omer and Brad Monks, a Union graduate, would never have remarked that Allred placed second. "Allred was the second place winner. Alma Hall placed fifth and Jerry Allred was ahead of Hall. Hall had a time of just over 11:00. They had about 30 guys and 10 girls in the 2 mile run. They lost Allred some how," stated Jay Omer, Union High School's head track coach. "It was definitely a foul up. Allred ran a good race." Brad Monks, Union assistant track coach, remarked, "I know Jerry Allred took second. We (Monks and the other Union coaches) watched the whole race and there was no doubt that Allred was in the top three. With about two laps left he went ahead of the Rifle kid. 1 saw him run eight full laps. No doubt about it. We had some Union athletes, Alma Hall and Joe Starkcy, in the same lap with him. Hall placed fifth and Starkey nabbed seventh place." Monks added, "Allred and the meet's top seven runners wore in the same lap. Allred beat Hall and Starkey. There was no way he missed a lap. Overall the Rangely Invitational was a good meet. Wc had a much better view in the stands. Stewart, Glenwood Springs; Whittington, Rifle; Allred, Uinlah; Hall and Starkey, Union, were together for a long time and then Stewart, Whittington Whit-tington and Allred pulled away." It that isn't enough to prove thai Jerry Allred captured second place and that he completed all eight laps, then here is a comment by the fifth place winner win-ner in the 2-mile, Alma Hall of Union. "Jerry Allred did take second place. No, I didn't lap him. He ran all the laps. He passed me toward the end of the third lap and was ahead of me the rest of the way. He beat mc by quite a ways. The first place guy was 200 yards ahead of nto when he crossed the finish line. Allred ran all eight laps. I ran with Allred for three laps and then he passed mc." |
