Tor Women and Others' workshop held Saturday The "For Women and Others" workshop and dinner meeting held Saturday at the Vocational Center and frontier Grill were deemed a success, according to the committee members. Esther Landa spoke on "Women Issue's Now and Future," The women i the world as in this county are restricted to less desirable work and w often underpaid, even in jobs requiring high qualifications, said Ms. lida. Women are now shocked to find that they may have little or no "Wage under Social Security after &ying home and raising their families kcaus'! of their status as dependents , foring all or a portion of their lives, aid Ms. Landa. We feel that these omen have rights as well as women towork, she stated. tone Fisher, spoke to the group on w income problems of heads of Households, especially the single "in person. She said two parent families living in poverty are decreasing. Percentage of single head of households increased 46 percent between bet-ween 1970 and 1976. Judith Romeny Wolback spoke on legal rights of women. Ms. Wolback encouraged anyone going to an attorney at-torney to find out what you are going to be charged and you also have a right to have a contract with your attorney. She also encouraged those present to have a will, because of the Utah law. During the dinner meeting, Alice Shearer told her audience of the new budget that was given to the Salt Lake City council Tuesday of last week. She noted that the budget showed some 2 million dollars in a contingency fund (which would be similar to a petty cash fund in a business of your own). She said this fund is nothing petty it is over one fifth of the current mill levy on property. Also she noted the budget . contained some $45,000 for memberships mem-berships in various organizations, and for conventions, over $41,000 and since you have to travel to conventions, she said $138,000 has been requested for travel. A grand total of $230,000 or enough to reduce the property tax levy by Vi of a mill. You probably have forgotten when you were reassessed the first time six years ago, and now you will be hit again in Duchesne County, said Ms. Shearer. Utah will find that they will not have a surplus budget this year, with the presidential cuts, commented Ms. Shearer. Ms. Shearer spoke on some of the recent legislative activities. As . chairperson of the budget committee, she said it will be their duty to isolate any overspending or duplication that we find in the budget. To the extent we do so , we'll be performing a public- ', service for which we have been elected. i i Door prizes were won by. Melba'l. Jean Labrum and Marion A. Behunin served as chairpersons for the event. Lois Rasmussen of Lapoint entertained en-tertained the group with her humor. LaRue Lamb, vice-president, conducted con-ducted a short business meeting. Ellen Rawlings reported the new officers as selected by the nominating committee. For president, Ruth Allen; vice president, Pearl Labrum; secretary, Ellen Rawlings and treasurer, Lillian Carlson. The new officers will be installed in-stalled in June. Vincent Lafferty and Jean Smith of the Vocational Center were responsible for the workshop program, also Utah State University, Utah Nurses Association and the dinner was by the Roosevelt Business and Professional Women's Club. |
