Some-wide gains and losses were mixed, but vthe large majority of stocks were lower. Great Northern preferred and Su- far fell 2, Anaconda 11, Mexican Central i and Union Pacific, Northern Pacific Delaware & Hudson and National Lead a point. There were 8000 shares of United States Steel sold at the opening at unchanged un-changed from last night to i lower. Readr Ing advance 1 and Pennsylvania, Canadian Cana-dian Pacific and Smelting a point- Prices gave way throughout after the irregular opening. The extremely weak features were Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific Pa-cific and United States Steel. Reading was hammered to a fraction below yesterday's yes-terday's closing and average losses were large. As on yesterday, Erie, L. N., and the Southern Railway stocks received a report. The losses included 4 in Sugar, 21 in Missouri Pacific, 2 in Union Pacific, Northern Pacific and 1 in U. S. Stel. The appearance of buying orders on declines de-clines made the bears cautious and thev bought to cover shorts, although the bank statement made a poor showing. Weak points were Northern Pacific, which fell 2J, Great Northern preferred 21 and U. S. Steel preferred 2.
