Hugh Kelly, one of the heroes of the Daly West explosion ex-plosion four years ago, died In this city yesterday oi rheumatism of the heart, . caused by injuries received at the time of the explosion. The explosion, which occurrred in July, 1902, killed thirty-three men. A rescuing party was organized a few minutes min-utes after the accident, and Kelly was one of the first to enter the mine to bring the dead and injured men to the surface.' Dunne the work of rescue four of the rescuing party died as the result of inhaling the deadly gas. Kelly brought several men to the surface, but was finally overcome by gas in the mine and was dragged out in an unconscious condition. For several days it was feared Kelly would die, but his strong constitution pulled him through. After partly recovering his strength he went . to aHtornia, where he remained re-mained for some time in the hope of recovering re-covering his shattered health. He returned re-turned to Salt Lake City, but was again compelled to geek a lower altitude. Despite De-spite all efforts for a cure Kelly had been slowly dying ever since the accident. acci-dent. None knew this better than he, but he made no complaint, holding up bravely until the end came yesterday. Kelly was 28 years old, and had lived in Park City all his life, his parents being be-ing among the pioneers of the camp. He is survived by nis wife, two children, a father, two sisters and three brothers, besides a number of relatives in Salt Lake. |
