Miss Behnee is a New York girl who attracted attention in oratorio ora-torio work before she was 18 years old. 8he became the special protege of the lnte William Steinway, who was influential influ-ential In having her sent to Germany to study for the operatic stage. Her first teachers were Madam Ress and Reinhold Hermann. After this she underwent special coaching coach-ing with Marie Lehman and Prof. E:n-mench. E:n-mench. Her operatic debut was at Bres-lau Bres-lau in the. role of Asucena, on " the strength of which she received a contract for five- years. During that time she acquired ac-quired the German and Italian opera repertoire, rep-ertoire, singing In all the principal German Ger-man cities. Two years ago, when the new German Opera Comique was founded In Berlin on lines similar to the famous Opera Comliue in Paris, Miss Behnee was secured for leading contralto con-tralto roles. This honor she won os much for her fine diction and histrionic ability Ms ,for her vocal gifts. In addition to her German experience. Miss Behnee sang one season at Covent Garden, appearing In the "Melsterslnger," "Gotterdammerung" and "Die Walkure." Miss Behnee would have made her American Amer-ican debut as Kundry In Savage's "Par-sifal'V "Par-sifal'V company but for the fact that the management at Breslau refused to release re-lease her.
